Ketogenic lifestyle to lose weight naturally in 2023
It’s typically called a “Ketogenic diet” but I feel like its better suited as a Ketogenic lifestyle. The word “diet” seems to be a restriction, a deprivation and a sacrifice. Must of us have tried dieting at least once in our lifetime. There are so many types of diets out there, but in the end they all have the same results…. It’s a cycle of short-term changes, it will work for a while, you are motivated, you lose some weight but what happens after? You get tired, hungry and feel deprived so you can’t keep up and eventually, the pounds creep back.
Diets don’t work. At least not in the long run, on the other hand, a better way to lose weight and maintain it is by eating with your health in mind. In other words, don’t diet; instead, follow a healthy lifestyle by eating nutritious, whole foods and stay active, let your body shed any excess weight naturally at a steady pace.
Many diets are based on low-fat intake and calorie restriction. But if you over-restrict your calories, your body responds by slowing down your metabolic rate and your ability to burn calories. When glucose is released into the bloodstream during digestion, the pancreas secretes a hormone called insulin whose job is to carry the glucose to the most needed places for fuel, primary to the brain and muscle. When we eat a great deal of carbs, excessive amounts of glucose enter the bloodstream creating a large quantity of insulin to clear the glucose away. This rush of insulin increases our feeling of hunger and in a vicious cycle increases our desire to eat more and more carbs. As a result, the excess of glucose is storage as fat leading us to weight gain, premature aging, coronary heart disease and type II diabetes. In other words by following the american diet, we as a nation have been doing the very thing that causes us to gain weight in the first place.
On the other hand, fats must be burned and are not easily stored, unlike glucose, they don’t spike insulin. In simple words, a ketogenic lifestyle allows for a substantial food intake but reduces the carbs and sugar consumption . The simple path to a ketogenic lifestyle is by eating a high-fat, low-carbohydrate and moderate-protein intake.
Ketosis is a metabolic process that involves the body burning stored fat instead of glucose. Using fat for fuel provides consistent energy levels and more effective fuel source for the body. Ketosis is the incomplete metabolism of fatty acids, usually from carbohydrate deficiency. According to Dr Joseph Mercola: “Nutritional ketosis is the state you achieve when entering a fat burning state. It’s an exceptionally healthy way to create the condition your body needs to stay healthy and age well”
Some of us at some point in our lives and routinely throughout the day have some amount of ketones in our blood without realizing it. One sample is when we eat dinner before 6pm and didn’t eat again until having breakfast next day, depending how long is the interval between dinner and breakfast you could be on a slight state of ketosis for more than 12-16 hours. However most people never achieve a consistent state of ketosis due to the constant supply of carbohydrate in their diet.
Since the early 1920s the ketogenic diet was successfully used to treat epilepsy cases and its now been re-evaluated as a powerful therapeutic choice to treat Alzheimer’s, Parkinson’s disease, AlS and even Autism.
But during the 1980’s, nutritional guidelines and strategic food marketing convinced people that consuming fat was harmful and the low-fat revolution started; sadly, the obesity rates have continued increasing since the introduction of these low-fat recommendations leading people to assume that all fats are bad and the obesity epidemic. How have we allowed ourselves to come to this point?
Fat is a key source of energy and supports balanced hormones. Fat comprises a major structural component of every cell of your body, your brain is composed of 60% fat and cholesterol. A diet lacking in fat could seriously reduce the efficiency of your immune system and make you prone to infectious diseases and many degenerative conditions such as cancer.
There are four different types of fats: Saturated, mono-saturated, polyunsaturated and trans fats. The essential fatty acids are those that aren’t synthesized in the body and therefore must be obtained from foods. They are classified as polyunsaturated omega-3, omega-6 and omega-9.
For many years There has been a misconception that fat will make you fat when in reality Fat is the missing key to successfully lose weight. But be careful, not all fats are created equally, I refer to the healthy fats; the fat that your body needs. Common sources of healthy saturated fat can be found in coconut oil and animal products like red meat, whole milk, butter and cheese. The healthy monounsaturated fats are found in seafood, almonds, olive oil and avocados. The only recommended polyunsaturated fats are coming from raw nuts and seeds that have not been yet processed.
The harmful fats are the industrial-made trans fats, processed vegetable oils and refined sugar. Sadly these type of fats are widely available in fast food places and must processed foods. Trans fat could also be found in margarine, doughnuts, breads, cookies, popcorn and hydrogenated vegetable oils like sunflower and soybean oil. Hydrogenated vegetable oil may increase inflammation and is hurtful to your heart and blood sugar control.
